Ce travail est né d’un premier voyage en Syrie en 2002, à l’occasion du Festival international de la photographie d’Alep. Il s’inscrit dans une relation au territoire faite de lenteur, de déplacement et d’attention aux signes.
À Palmyre, Alep et Damas, la photographie cherche moins à décrire qu’à saisir ce qui affleure : les traces de l’histoire, la présence des architectures, la lumière sur les murs, les seuils et les espaces traversés. Ces images appartiennent à un temps antérieur aux destructions qui ont profondément transformé le pays ; elles portent aujourd’hui, malgré elles, une dimension de mémoire.
Elles témoignent d’un territoire tel qu’il s’offrait alors au regard, entre permanence, fragilité et disparition.
